Fencing / Deck / Landscaping Cost in the GTA!
FENCING COSTS IN THE GTA: $4,500 to $35,000

A new fence - for privacy, security, pet containment, or property definition - is one of the most frequently requested exterior renovation scopes in the GTA and one of the most variable in cost depending on material, height, and lot configuration. Understanding what drives fencing cost prevents the wide variation in contractor quotes from creating confusion before a decision is made.

What affects GTA fencing cost:

  • Material — pressure-treated wood is the lowest-cost option; cedar is the premium wood choice; aluminum, vinyl, and composite are lower-maintenance alternatives at higher initial cost
  • Height — a 4-foot fence costs less in material and labour than a 6-foot privacy fence over the same linear footage
  • Lot configuration — a flat lot with clear access costs less to fence than a sloped lot requiring stepped or raked panel installation
  • Post installation method — concrete-set posts in drilled holes are more labour-intensive than driven posts but significantly more durable in Ontario's freeze-thaw soil conditions; concrete-set posts are the correct specification for any permanent GTA fence
  • Gate count and configuration — each gate adds material and hardware cost; a double-swing gate for vehicle access adds significantly more than a standard pedestrian gate
  • Permit requirements — most GTA municipalities require a fence permit for fences above a specific height (typically 6 feet in residential areas); confirm with your municipality before construction

Current GTA fencing cost by material and scope:

  • Pressure-treated wood privacy fence (6 feet, per linear foot supply and installation): $55 to $95 per linear foot; a 100-foot fence: $5,500 to $9,500
  • Cedar privacy fence (6 feet, per linear foot supply and installation): $75 to $130 per linear foot; a 100-foot fence: $7,500 to $13,000
  • Vinyl or PVC privacy fence (6 feet, per linear foot): $80 to $140 per linear foot; lower maintenance than wood; never requires painting or staining
  • Aluminum fence (4 to 5 feet, ornamental, per linear foot): $65 to $120 per linear foot; appropriate for front yards and pool enclosures; corrosion-resistant
  • Composite fence (6 feet, per linear foot): $100 to $180 per linear foot; wood-look appearance with significantly longer lifespan than natural wood
  • Chain-link fence (4 to 6 feet, per linear foot): $25 to $55 per linear foot; the most cost-effective perimeter fencing option; appropriate for rear yards and utility areas
  • Standard pedestrian gate supply and installation: $400 to $1,200 depending on material and width
  • Double-swing vehicle gate supply and installation: $1,500 to $4,500

Full perimeter fencing for a typical GTA semi-detached lot (approximately 150 linear feet):

  • Pressure-treated wood: $8,500 to $14,500
  • Cedar: $11,500 to $20,000
  • Vinyl: $12,500 to $21,500
  • Composite: $15,500 to $27,500

What is included in every Maple Leaf fencing scope:

  • Post holes drilled to below the frost line — minimum 4 feet in the GTA — and posts set in concrete for structural stability through Ontario freeze-thaw cycles
  • All panels, posts, caps, and hardware in the confirmed material and profile
  • All gates with self-latching hardware and anti-sag bracing on all gate frames
  • Grade accommodation — stepped or raked panel installation on sloped lots at no additional charge where the slope is within standard parameters
  • Permit application and management where a fence permit is required
  • 1–2 year workmanship warranty on all installation work

DECK CONSTRUCTION COSTS IN THE GTA: $15,000 to $85,000+

A new deck or deck replacement is one of the most consistently requested exterior renovation scopes in the GTA — extending the functional living area of the home into the outdoor space during Ontario's spring, summer, and fall seasons and adding measurable value to the property at resale.

What affects GTA deck construction cost:

  • Deck material — pressure-treated wood is the lowest cost; composite decking (Trex, Fiberon, TimberTech) is significantly more durable and lower maintenance at higher initial cost; hardwood (Ipe, Tigerwood) is a premium material with exceptional longevity
  • Deck size and configuration — a basic 12 by 16-foot ground-level deck costs significantly less than a two-level deck with stairs, a pergola, and integrated lighting
  • Structural requirements — a ground-level deck on concrete piers costs less than a raised deck requiring a ledger attachment to the house, a permit, and structural footings below the frost line
  • Permit requirements — any deck above 24 inches from grade requires a building permit in most GTA municipalities; the permit requires drawings showing the deck structure, footing depth, and connection to the house

Current GTA deck construction cost by material and scope:

  • Pressure-treated wood deck (12 by 16 feet, ground-level, basic railing): $15,000 to $25,000
  • Pressure-treated wood deck (16 by 20 feet, raised with stairs and railing): $22,000 to $38,000
  • Composite deck (Trex or equivalent, 12 by 16 feet, ground-level): $22,000 to $35,000
  • Composite deck (16 by 20 feet, raised, with stairs, glass or aluminum railing): $35,000 to $60,000
  • Two-level composite deck with pergola, built-in seating, and lighting: $55,000 to $85,000+
  • Deck replacement (remove existing deck, replace with composite, same footprint): $18,000 to $45,000 depending on existing footing condition and new deck specification

Permit requirements for GTA decks:

  • Building permit required — any deck more than 24 inches above grade; any deck attached to the house; any deck above a basement or enclosed space
  • No permit required — freestanding decks at grade level below 24 inches in most GTA municipalities; confirm with your specific municipality before construction
  • Permit fees — $300 to $1,500 depending on declared project value and municipality
  • Structural drawings — required with the permit application; footing depth, beam sizing, and ledger connection must be specified

LANDSCAPING COSTS IN THE GTA: $5,000 to $80,000+

Landscaping is the exterior renovation scope with the widest cost range — because it covers everything from a basic lawn grading and sod installation to a complete backyard transformation with interlocking, retaining walls, planting beds, lighting, and irrigation. Understanding the cost by landscaping type prevents both over-spending on elements that do not return value and under-investing in the exterior presentation that makes the first impression at every showing.

What affects GTA landscaping cost:

  • Scope — sod installation and basic grading is a fundamentally different scope from a complete interlocking stone backyard with retaining walls and a planting design
  • Grading requirements — a property with inadequate drainage requires grading correction before any surface improvement; poor grading that directs water toward the foundation is a structural problem before it is a landscaping problem
  • Interlocking stone selection — standard concrete interlocking pavers cost significantly less than natural flagstone or premium manufactured stone products
  • Existing conditions — removing existing concrete, asphalt, or old interlocking adds demolition cost before the new installation begins
  • Irrigation — an in-ground irrigation system adds $4,000 to $12,000 to any landscaping scope but significantly reduces the ongoing maintenance requirement

Current GTA landscaping costs by scope:

Grading and Drainage

  • Property regrading (correcting slope away from foundation): $2,500 to $8,000 depending on the extent of soil movement required
  • French drain or weeping tile installation: $3,000 to $8,000 for a perimeter system
  • Catch basin installation: $800 to $2,500 per basin including excavation and connection
  • Downspout extension and underground drainage: $500 to $2,000 per downspout depending on run length

Lawn and Sod

  • Sod supply and installation (including soil preparation and grading): $3.50 to $6.50 per square foot installed; a standard GTA rear yard of 400 square feet: $1,400 to $2,600
  • Lawn restoration (overseeding, aeration, topdressing): $500 to $2,500 depending on lawn area and condition

Interlocking Stone

  • Standard concrete interlocking driveway (per square foot supply and installation): $18 to $30 per square foot; a standard two-car driveway of 400 square feet: $7,200 to $12,000
  • Premium interlocking driveway (larger format stone, complex pattern, edging): $28 to $45 per square foot
  • Interlocking patio or backyard (per square foot): $18 to $35 per square foot
  • Natural flagstone patio or pathway: $30 to $65 per square foot depending on stone type and pattern complexity

Retaining Walls

  • Interlocking concrete block retaining wall (per square foot of face area): $55 to $120 per square foot; a wall 30 feet long by 3 feet high (90 square feet): $5,000 to $11,000
  • Natural stone or armour stone retaining wall: $90 to $180 per square foot of face area
  • Permit requirement — retaining walls above 1 metre (approximately 3 feet 3 inches) require a building permit in most GTA municipalities

Planting and Garden Design

  • Basic planting bed installation (soil preparation, edging, mulch, and plants): $1,500 to $5,000 per bed depending on size and plant selection
  • Complete planting design and installation (full property): $8,000 to $30,000 depending on property size and plant maturity
  • Tree planting (per tree, supply and installation): $300 to $2,500 depending on tree species and size at installation

Outdoor Lighting

  • Low-voltage landscape lighting (pathway, uplighting, and accent): $2,500 to $8,000 for a complete system; hardwired and weatherproofed
  • In-ground irrigation system: $4,000 to $12,000 for a complete system with smart controller

Complete backyard transformation (interlocking patio, retaining wall, planting beds, sod, and lighting) for a typical GTA detached home:

  • Standard specification: $25,000 to $50,000
  • Premium specification with natural stone, mature plantings, and irrigation: $50,000 to $80,000+

In most GTA municipalities, a building permit is required for decks that are more than 600mm (approximately 24 inches) above grade, that are attached to the house, or that exceed a certain square footage threshold. Permit requirements vary by municipality, Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and other GTA cities each have their own thresholds. We assess permit requirements for every deck project during the consultation and manage all permit applications in-house where required. Building a deck without a required permit creates complications at resale, insurance claims, and any future permit application on the property.
For most GTA homeowners, premium composite decking is our recommendation, it handles Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles, summer UV exposure, and seasonal moisture swings better than any natural wood product, requires a fraction of the maintenance, and produces a consistently beautiful surface for 30+ years. Pressure-treated wood is the right choice for budget-conscious projects where the maintenance commitment will be followed through. Cedar is excellent for homeowners who love natural wood and are willing to invest in regular upkeep. PVC is ideal for pool surrounds and high-moisture applications. We help every client select the right material for their specific priorities and conditions rather than defaulting to a single recommendation.
An average-sized deck of 200 to 300 square feet takes 1 to 3 weeks from construction start to completion, depending on complexity, the presence of elevated framing, and the number of added features. Permit approval (where required) adds 2 to 6 weeks of lead time before construction can begin. Multi-level decks, pergola additions, and decks on challenging sites take longer. We provide a detailed project schedule before construction begins and communicate any adjustments throughout.
The decision comes down to priorities. If natural warmth, grain character, and the ability to stain in any colour matter to you, and you're willing to commit to restaining every two to three years, cedar is the more beautiful material. If you want a fence that will look essentially the same in 20 years with nothing more than an occasional rinse, and you're comfortable with vinyl's more uniform appearance, vinyl is the significantly lower-maintenance choice. We install both to the same quality standard and help every client think through the trade-offs honestly for their specific situation.
Spring through fall, April through October, is the primary construction season for outdoor projects in the GTA. Concrete footings can't be poured in frozen ground; interlocking base work requires above-freezing temperatures for compaction; sod can't establish in frozen soil. Some fence installation can occur through late fall and mild winter days. Booking outdoor projects in the winter for spring construction start is common and smart, spring and summer are peak season, and scheduling ahead ensures your project isn't delayed by contractor availability. Some contractors offer off-season discounts for fall booking.
Yes, and this is one of the most significant practical advantages of working with a full-service renovation company for outdoor projects. When deck construction, fencing, and landscaping are coordinated by a single team, the project is designed cohesively from the start, the fence line respects the deck placement, the interlocking patio coordinates with both, the grade of the finished lawn connects properly to the deck height, and the garden beds are positioned within the overall design rather than added around existing elements. The result is an outdoor space that looks designed as a whole rather than assembled from separate decisions made independently.

Unlike vague ballpark quotes from other contractors, our estimates are detailed and comprehensive. We take the time to understand the full scope of your project before pricing it, which means no unexpected cost increases mid-renovation and no items you didn't know were missing from your quote.
