Kitchen styles turn over roughly every decade. Shaker doors, flat slab, warm wood, cool grey, brass, black, back to brass. None of it determines whether a kitchen is good. What determines that is a set of fundamentals that haven't changed in fifty years and won't change in the next fifty. They're dimensional, they're ergonomic, and they're mostly invisible in a photograph. A kitchen with all ten works beautifully in any style. A kitchen missing three of them will frustrate its owners daily regardless of what it cost. Here they are.
The classic work triangle connecting sink, range, and fridge still matters, but modern kitchens are better described in zones: prep, cooking, cleanup, storage, and serving. Each zone needs its own counter space and its own storage. Knives and boards near the prep area. Pots and utensils at the range. Dish supplies at the sink. When storage doesn't match the zone it serves, you spend the whole cooking process walking.
Total counter area matters less than where it is. The three positions that must have landing space are beside the range, beside the fridge, and beside the sink. Aim for a minimum of 15 inches on at least one side of the fridge, 12 to 15 inches on both sides of the range, and 18 to 24 inches on the primary side of the sink. A kitchen with generous counter overall but nowhere to set a hot pan down is a kitchen you fight with.
Circulation dimensions are where a lot of otherwise good kitchens fail. A single-cook aisle needs a minimum of 42 inches between opposing counters. A kitchen where two people work simultaneously needs 48 inches. A walkway that isn't a work aisle can drop to 36. Below 42, two people cannot pass each other while a dishwasher door is open, which is a daily reality rather than an edge case.
The most under-specified element in GTA kitchens. Recirculating hoods filter some odour and remove no heat, moisture, or grease. Specify a ducted hood, 400 to 600 CFM for most residential ranges and higher for a professional-style unit, with rigid duct on the shortest practical exterior route. The hood should be as wide as the range or wider, and mounted at the manufacturer's specified height. Where a high-CFM hood is installed in a tight house, make-up air needs to be addressed.
💡 KEY POINT Items two, three, and four cannot be corrected after cabinetry is installed. They are decided on the floor plan, and they are the three most common reasons a newly renovated kitchen disappoints its owners.
A single ceiling fixture leaves you working in your own shadow at the counter, which is the one place in the kitchen where you need to see. Under-cabinet task lighting along every work surface, general ceiling lighting distributed rather than centred, and accent or pendant lighting over an island or table. All of it on dimmers. Under-cabinet lighting in particular is inexpensive during a renovation and transformative.
Deep drawers on full-extension soft-close runners outperform door-and-shelf base cabinets in every measurable way. Nothing is lost at the back, and you never kneel on the floor to find a pot. The exception is under-sink, where plumbing dictates a door, and a tall pantry, where a full-height pull-out is better still. Everywhere else in the base run, specify drawers.
Cabinet volume is not the same as usable storage. A kitchen can have plenty of both and still leave things on the counter if the configuration is wrong. Measure what you actually store before cabinetry is designed: dry goods volume, pot and pan sizes, small appliance footprints, and serving pieces. Then specify against those numbers rather than a standard layout, including the appliance garage or dedicated cabinet for the machines that otherwise live on the counter permanently.
Kitchens draw far more power than the homes most GTA kitchens sit in were wired for. A well-designed kitchen has dedicated circuits for the range, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and small appliance counters, GFCI protection where required, outlets distributed so no appliance cord crosses a work surface, outlets inside any appliance garage, and provision for under-cabinet lighting. In older housing stock, confirm whether a panel upgrade or knob and tube remediation is needed before finalizing scope.
Different surfaces belong in different spots, and matching them to use rather than to a single aesthetic produces a kitchen that ages well. Quartz is the practical default for counters. Natural stone requires sealing and tolerates less. Backsplash behind the range should be genuinely cleanable, which favours large-format tile or a slab over textured mosaic. Flooring needs to handle dropped pots and standing water at the dishwasher, which is where a good LVP or porcelain outperforms most engineered wood.
Roughly a third of a kitchen budget goes to cabinetry, and it's the component you physically touch every day. The specifications that matter: plywood boxes rather than particle board, dovetailed or well-constructed drawer boxes, quality soft-close hinges and full-extension runners from a named manufacturer, adjustable shelving, a durable finish, and a warranty stated in years. Two quotes that look identical in a rendering can differ enormously here.

A kitchen that skipped them cannot be fixed by any cosmetic update. You cannot add aisle width to a finished room. You cannot move a fridge that has no landing counter beside it. You cannot retrofit a ducted hood into a layout that has no route to the exterior. Those decisions are permanent from the day the cabinets go in. Which is why the fundamentals deserve the attention homeowners typically give to finish selection, and why the design conversation should start with the floor plan rather than the door style.
